Canvas Photo Gift Sizes: 8×10, 11×14, 16×20 & When to Go Bigger
Practical canvas sizes for holiday and birthday photo gifts—desk, hallway, and living-room scale—with exact 300 DPI pixel counts and a quick phone-photo check.
Technician Summary (The Short Version)
- •For a first canvas gift, 11×14" and 16×20" cover most nightstands, hallways, and small walls without looking lost or oversized.
- •An 8×10" is a desk or shelf gift; a single 16×20" is still too small as the only piece above a full sofa—use a pair or step up to 24×36".
- •Check effective PPI before you order: a typical 12 MP phone photo is about 189 PPI at 16×20" (wall-ready); a 24 MP default iPhone file is about 268 PPI (very good).
Gift Size Cheat Sheet (With 300 DPI Pixel Counts)
Pick the size from where the gift will live, then confirm your file has enough pixels. Numbers below are face size at 300 DPI before gallery-wrap allowance.
| Gift Size | Best For | Pixels @ 300 DPI | Phone-Photo Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8×10" | Desk, bookshelf, small shelf | 2400×3000 px | Easy for any modern phone |
| 11×14" | Nightstand, hallway pair, entryway | 3300×4200 px | 11:14 ratio—not the same as 4:5 |
| 16×20" | Most popular wall canvas gift (4:5) | 4800×6000 px | 12 MP ≈ 189 PPI; 24 MP ≈ 268 PPI |
| 18×24" | Home office or dining feature | 5400×7200 px | Matches many phone 3:4 crops |
| 24×36" | Statement living-room gift | 7200×10800 px | Preview on the wall first |
Holiday & Occasion Picks
Mother’s / Father’s Day and grandparent gifts: an 11×14" or 16×20" portrait with a gentle crop often lands better than an oversized piece they cannot hang.
New home or housewarming: measure the furniture first. Above an 84" sofa, a single 16×20" looks small—pair two 16×20" canvases or choose 24×36".
Pet portrait gifts: stay in standard canvas sizes (8×10, 11×14, 16×20). Crop to the frame ratio before ordering so ears and noses are not cut by the wrap.
Before you buy: run the free print-size calculator, crop tool, and wall mockup so the gift is sharp and the right scale.
Gallery Wrap Allowance for Gift Canvases
If the lab wraps the photo around the stretcher bars, add wrap depth on each side of the face. For a 16×20" face with a 1.5" gallery wrap and 0.25" bleed, the full file is about 19.5×23.5" (5850×7050 px at 300 DPI).
Keep important faces inside the front panel; leave sky, background, or soft edges for the wrap.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the safest canvas size if I am not sure where they will hang it?
- 11×14" or 16×20". Both work on a desk, dresser, or small wall. Avoid a lone oversized piece unless you know the furniture width.
- Is an 11×14 the same crop as a 16×20?
- No. 11×14 is an 11:14 ratio; 16×20 is 4:5. Crop separately for each size so faces stay centered.
- Can I gift a canvas from a text-message photo?
- Usually not at wall size. Messaging apps shrink files. Use the original camera-roll image, then check PPI in the print size calculator before ordering.
