Best Size Wall Art Above a Sofa, Bed or Fireplace (The 2/3 Scale Rule)

Interior designer measurements for choosing single canvases, pairs, and 3-panel triptychs above 72", 84", and 96" sofas plus queen and king beds.

Technician Summary (The Short Version)

  • •The 2/3 Rule: Your wall art (or multi-frame grouping) should span 55% to 75% of the total width of the sofa or headboard underneath it.
  • •Hang the bottom edge of the frame 6 to 8 inches above the top of the sofa back cushions or headboard.
  • •For a 2-piece or 3-piece set, leave 2.5 to 3.5 inches of wall space between frames so the eye reads them as one connected unit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 16×20 canvas too small above a standard 84-inch couch?
A single 16×20" canvas is only 19% of an 84" sofa's width and will look lost on the wall. Either hang a pair of 16×20" or 20×24" canvases side-by-side, or step up to a 24×36" or 30×40" horizontal piece.
